NHC School Board Member Tim Merrick Files for NC House District 20

WILMINGTON, NC – December 15, 2025 – New Hanover County School Board Member Tim Merrick announced today that he will officially file for election to the North Carolina House of Representatives, District 20, on Wednesday, December 17 at 12:00 p.m. Supporters, community members, and members of the press are invited to join Tim at the filing to mark the official launch of his 2026 campaign.

“For too long, the hard-working families of southeastern North Carolina have been told to accept less and expect nothing better,” said School Board Member Merrick. “This campaign is not about politics as usual or more of the same. It’s about real change—bringing new leadership to Raleigh that will actually show up, listen, and care about the people who live here.”

Families across our region are working harder than ever, yet falling further behind as costs rise and opportunities shrink. “Parents are doing everything right, but they’re getting less in return,” Merrick continued. “That’s not fair, and it’s not sustainable. We deserve a future that works for all of us.”

Merrick is running because every child, every family, and every neighborhood in North Carolina deserves real opportunity, stability, and a fair shot at getting ahead. His campaign is focused on practical, people-first solutions that reflect the values and needs of southeastern North Carolina—not special interests or party insiders.

“At the hands of Republican leadership like our opponent, we’ve been asked to settle for underfunded schools, rising costs, and policies that put corporations ahead of working families,” Merrick said. “I’m fighting for something different, a North Carolina where:

  • Opportunity is real and reachable for every family
  • Small businesses can grow and strengthen our local economy
  • Public schools give every child a world-class education
  • Roads, water systems, and public infrastructure keep pace with our growing community
  • Healthcare is affordable and accessible because people matter more than profits”

By flipping this seat, Merrick says Democrats can help restore balance to a General Assembly that is currently not representative of southeastern North Carolina or the state as a whole. “Our voices deserve to be heard in Raleigh,” he said. “This district deserves leadership that reflects who we are and fights for who we can become.”

The 2026 general election will be held on November 3, 2026.
